Neighborhood Leadership Institute
We aim to have accessible green spaces in every neighborhood in Dayton, telling our stories through technology and plants.
About
Scan and Plant is a project built upon community stories and the need for useful, beautiful, and well-lit green spaces. The light of these communal spaces comes from the solar-powered lights, ensuring the safety and beauty of the area, as well as the wisdom of our neighbors who help make Dayton so great.
With the goal to activate underutilized green spaces in urban neighborhoods, we chose to tell our collective stories through culturally rooted micro-gardens via QR code technology. This project celebrates local heritage, improves access to nature, and empowers youth with agriculture, tech, and creative storytelling skills.
When you come across a “Scan & Plant” sign in your neighborhood, you can scan the QR code and it will take you to a page that shares the story of a community member who resides in that neighborhood and an explanation of the plants in that garden.

Our Story
A group of Dayton residents joined together in 2025 as part of the Neighborhood Leadership Institute. With combined passion for agriculture, storytelling, youth, safety, and overall wellbeing for others, we proposed an idea to beautify our city and engage others in the process.
We all come from different backgrounds, cultures, or professions and we knew that would be our strength for identifying what our community needs and deserves. Through solar lights & sustainable community gardens, we seek to unify, beautify, and make safe our beautiful gem city.
